Fall Capsule Wardrobe: Skirt Edition

I have been having so much fun with the Fall Capsule Wardrobe Remix on Caitlin's blog, Greater than Rubies!  For this remix, I am creating 30 fall-friendly ensembles from 20 clothing items.  I believe that I have previously mentioned my love of autumn which definitely extends into a love for fall clothes!  Even though it is still too warm in the Washington D.C. area to wear most of these outfits, I find myself counting down the days until I can comfortably wear my mustard sweater and my new riding boots.

I have found that it is easier than I expected to put together so many outfits from 20 items of clothing (remind me of this moment when I'm stuck on my 29th outfit).  For this reason I chose to focus this post on five outfits created with the two skirts that I included in my remix.  Further, due to the bare legs, I figure that I might be able to wear these outfits a little sooner than my other fall creations.  When it (finally) gets cooler, I can easily add tights to each outfit.

You will recognize my navy and white print skirt from this post.  As my favorite summer skirt, I am super excited that it works well in cooler weather creations.

Here I paired my favorite skirt with a mustard striped sweater.  I used to think that I couldn't wear yellow due to my fair skin.  I liked the mustard trend so well, though, that I decided to try it anyway...and it worked!  If there is a particular style you like but don't think you can wear, don't write it off just yet.  You owe it to yourself to at least try it!  If it still doesn't work, try to make minor adjustments until it works for you (for example, try different shades of yellow instead of mustard).  To complete my outfit, I added my beautiful, new riding boots that I got for a great deal (that's what happens when you combine birthday coupons with purchasing boots at the end of May...).

Side note: I locked myself out of my apartment while taking these photos which is not so much fun when you are wearing a sweater in 90 degree weather.  My neighbor probably thinks I'm nuts.

This outfit is a bit more transitional from summer to fall with its loose eyelet top and patterned wedges.  Some chunky and sparkly jewelry add a bit of a glamorous touch!

This is an exact outfit from my previously mentioned "One Piece Many Ways" post.  It is perfect for work as a teacher and I am STILL waiting on that cooler weather to wear it!

On to the second skirt!  I like that this green number has an entirely different shape from the first skirt.  The differences between the two make for more versatile remixing options.

I think that the blue and green in this outfit compliment each other so well and that the button-up with the a-line skirt create a polished silhouette!  With my sassy, new booties and a glamorous necklace, I'm feeling good!

Phew!  We've made it to the last outfit of the post!  Are you still there?  This shirt is another purchase from my infamously successful outlet trip in August.  I love the colors because they work with just about every bottom I own!  By adding the denim jacket, I'm ready for cooler temperatures!

Now if only those temperatures would actually cool down!

  1. Great blog! I don't follow many (i.e. ANY), but I am always interested in seeing your new posts. I am loving your wardrobe mixing already! This is something I wish I was better at...especially wearing one item different ways. Transitioning summer pieces to fall is also great inspiration! My favorite from your above outfits is the pink eyelet shirt with the blue skirt. It's such an eclectic look with the many prints and details, but still very pulled together and sophisticated.

I'm also looking forward to seeing those booties from the gingham shirt/blue skirt outfit (great combo, by the way) in future posts. That is a type of shoe I've been interested in for quite some time, but I haven't made a purchase because I'm worried it's too trendy for me, or I won't know how to wear them with multiple wardrobe pieces.

    1. Wow! Thank you SO much! Trying remixes is really fun...and you find that you can actually wear something different ways (I still feel unsure of myself in this regard)...just put your mind to it! Maybe you could try the 20x30 Fall Capsule Wardrobe remix, too? And I JUST bought into the bootie trend. I love them but have only put them with this one outfit so far...I'm excited to see what I can do with them, too!

  3. Super cute skirt outfits! I used to wear a lot of skirts when I first started teaching but over the years I felt like they were too fussy and I found myself wearing pants. I wanted to challenge myself to wear more skirts with this remix challenge so I chose only skirt outfits this week (especially with the warm weather) and I was pleasantly pleased that I was actually comfortable in skirts!

    1. You know what, I used to wear tons of skirts and then went through a phase of at least five years where I avoided them. For some reason I went through a funk where I couldn't figure-out what tops to wear with skirts. II'm glad we are both reintroducing skirts to our wardrobe!

    2. Agh! you're absolutely right! you just reminded me why I avoided skirts for so long! I feel/felt the same way about tops! I'm so glad we're in this together! I think another factor for me was that I had two kids - from 2008 to present I've been having to re-think my clothing choices because I was either in maternity clothes, my post-partum body, and just the lifestyle of having little ones.

    3. Wow! I give you so much credit! I can barely get myself dressed in the morning sometimes, let alone myself and two little ones!

  4. Question: Are those the first 5 outfits you wore during the first 5 days of the challenge? or did you just put together 5 skirt outfits from your 20 pieces? For some reason I feel like I struggle looking stylish for school/work. I'm curious what other teachers factor into their school/work outfits.

    1. Hi, Iris. Good question! It is still too hot around here to wear most of the tops I am using for the challenge. I definitely plan to wear all of these outfits to work when the temperatures drop a bit. So far the only one I have worn is the brightly colored top with the green skirt and the jean jacket (because I could take the jean jacket off when I got too hot). You just gave me the idea to start using the label "teacher clothes" when I post an outfit I would wear to work! Stay tuned :)
