Throwback Thursday: Teal Skirt

Happy Throwback Thursday!  Today I'm participating in my friend, Shelly's, new monthly link-up all about blasts from the past!  February's prompt is an easy one -- share an old blog post!  So here we are, a post from August of 2015 in which I feature my favorite, often-worn teal skirt purchased circa 2006.  And you know what, I just wore this skirt on Wednesday!  I still love it and I still think it's super versatile.  It's kinda fun to see how my style (clothes and hair) have evolved over the years.  Which look is your favorite!

When Bri announced that this month's Third Thursday Threads theme is "Skirt Two (or more) Ways," I became curious as to the many ways that I've worn skirts during the past few years.  As I scrolled through the days, months and years' worth of posts, I noticed something.  I noticed that I wear my teal skirt tons!  This skirt starred in my second-ever blog post and has appeared as recently as April.  In fact, it has made nine blog appearances (not to mention the dozens of times I've worn it without photographing my outfit)!  Based-on statistical data, I do believe that this is my favorite skirt!

While I'll admit to a love of shopping, when I find a piece that works, I wear it!  I've owned this skirt for oh, maybe eight years.  It's funny because this skirt kind of flies under the radar in that I don't realize how frequently I wear it.  When I think of it, though, it makes sense as a closet staple!  One of the reasons that I love this skirt so much is that it is comfortable.  I never pull at it or worry that it's too short.  I also reach for this skirt often because it's versatile.  As you can see above, it goes with patterns, a varied color palette, neutrals, so many accessories and lots of completer pieces.  The options feel endless!  In fact, I just might wear this skirt tomorrow!

Which look is your favorite and why?  Do you have an item of clothing that has stood the test of time?

And just in case you need a teal skirt in your closet, here are a few I've found (I personally think the one on the bottom right is perfect):

Blogging Besties: Embroidered

Blogging Besties is a weekly series featuring Whitney of Whitney à la mode, Alex of The Cheerful Closet, Maricel of ::My Closet Catelogue:: and Selah of A Bibliophile's Style.  Each week, one of the bloggers will choose one component from the previous week's outfit to pass on in a brand new look.  This "take one, pass it on" challenge is an inspiration to stretch your closet and your imagination!

I've been so excited for this week's Blogging Besties since I get to pass-on some of Alex's inspiration for the first time!  She was so creative in her interpretation of the Disney prompt last week and totally nailed a fun work look!

From her outfit, Alex told me that I could pass along polka dots, a casual jacket, wedges or something embroidered.  This prompt couldn't have been more perfectly timed because I have been eyeing all of the embroidery lately!

It's not often that I totally buy into a trend but I'm loving all of the pretty, stitched floral patterns found on tops and dresses this spring!  I actually purchased a few embroidered pieces the very day that I wore this outfit.  That being said, I did not yet have these items when I took outfit photos.  So for today's purposes, I actually pulled-out one of the oldest tops in my closet...and my only embroidered piece!

I also passed-on a casual jacket but I think embroidery is more fun as the topic of this post!

For next week, Selah can pass along the oldest piece in her closet, a denim jacket, teal or scallops!

Le Bon Macaron

You know those days that are just good for your soul?  The days where the simple pleasures show you just how beautiful life is?  I had one of those days back in January and I'm just now getting the chance to post about it!

On a lovely day off from school, my best friend and I took a day trip to Grand Rapids, Michigan.  We started the day at the cutest coffee and macaron shop, Le Bon Macaron, the site of this photo shoot.  After coffee and sweets, we shopped all afternoon and then had dinner and drinks at Brewery Vivant. Amidst our busy lives, it was just so nice to be able to spend a day together doing fun things and experiencing some great places that Michigan has to offer!

For our date, I wore an outfit I loved!  Plenty of color, a whimsical print and classic lines are features that feel very me.  Evidently, my favorite kind of outfit is sort of reminiscent of a bunch of macarons!

So thank you, my beautiful friend of the past decade, Nicole, for being with me through thick and thin (and for taking these pictures)!  I can't wait for our next day together!

Styled by Someone Else

Happy Tuesday, loves!  I'm currently savoring my last week of freedom before heading back to school for teacher meetings on Monday.  Although our first football game is this week, so coaching season is already in full swing (I coach cheerleading, not football if you were confused for a second).

So I took a little break from being a style blogger today...but I still have pictures to show you!  How does that work, you ask?  I invited my mom, sister and niece into my closet to create some new outfits for the Styled by Someone Else series with The Blended Blog!

Let's start with the outfit that my mom created!

My mom was so thoughtful in helping me with this post!  She read up on current trends online and kept her eyes peeled for fun street style inspiration.  When she came over, she was envisioning cowgirl boots, a shorter skirt and a long cardigan.  My closet didn't yield the exact pieces she had in mind so she used her inspiration and some fun color combinations to create this outfit!  You guys, I love this outfit!  I can't wait for the weather to cool off so I can wear it!

My second outfit today was the creation of my 18-month-old niece, Eloise!  Didn't she nail it?!  You may be wondering how an almost-toddler put an outfit together so well.  First of all, she's a style prodigy.  Secondly, she did have some help.  While my mom was picking out her outfit, Eloise started carrying these shoes (that actually belong to my mom) around my apartment.  This was clearly a sign that she wanted me to wear them.  From there, my mom chose two outfits that went with the shoes.  We held them up for Eloise and I wore the one that she ran to first!  I liked this outfit so well that I kept it on for an evening of cocktails at the local art museum.

As for my sister's creation, you will have to wait to see it on Friday!  Without knowing it, Kayla put together an outfit that worked perfectly for my upcoming Blogging Besties prompt!  I decided it would be fun to extend the "styled by someone else" fun all week!

Eloise and Izzo get in on the styling action!

I am the luckiest to have these three in my life <3

Blogging Besties: Heather Grey

Blogging Besties is a weekly series featuring Whitney of Whitney à la mode, Alex of Undergraduate Style, Maricel of ::My Closet Catelogue:: and Selah of A Bibliophile's Style.  Each week, one of the bloggers will choose one component from the previous week's outfit to pass on in a brand new look.  This "take one, pass it on" challenge is an inspiration to stretch your closet and your imagination!

Selah wore this outfit when we met in real life during my recent trip to North Carolina.  I love that she wore an Eiffel Tower shirt just for me!  From this outfit, she gave me the following prompts: heather grey, pattern mixing, resurgent trend, and waffle knit!

I really tried to think of a resurgent trend to work with but ended up opting for heather grey (and I incorporated the stripes)!

I've only worn this tunic over skinny jeans in the past but I like how it worked tucked into my favorite skirt.  Plus, I usually wear black and white stripes with this skirt so I like how the heather grey created a softer look!

A colorful necklace and matching flats really pulled this outfit together!  I've been loving bright colors lately as I'm trying to channel spring!

Alright Alex, here are your choices for next week: spring outerwear, matching necklace and shoes, or a tunic not as a tunic!

What I'm Wearing:
Top: Banana Republic (similar, similar)
Necklace: Gift (similar, similar)
Skirt: Old Navy (similar, similar)
Flats: Hand-Me-Downs (similar, similar)
Jacket: Gap (exact)

Create28: Never Before Blogged

For my fellow personal style bloggers out there, do you have a piece in your closet that you wear all of the time but for some reason it never makes an appearance on your blog?  If yes, that's the purpose behind Never Before Blogged!  Let's showcase those hardworking items that don't get much glory!  Post yours on Instagram using #create28winterlooks

I've owned this sweatshirt for so many years that I've lost count!  I wear it so frequently that I'm surprised it's never been blogged before!  It is one of my go-to tops on sleepy workday mornings when I can't figure out what to wear.  Technically it's a sweatshirt so it's super comfy but the sequin polka dots make it dressy enough for work.  I also like it's thin texture because it can work over jeans or dress pants but it can also be tucked into skirts.  The pattern and sparkle give it enough interest that I don't have to add much else to the outfit.

Here I've paired the sweatshirt with my favorite skirt as well as tights and moccasins in shades of brown to accent the sequins.  So many of my favorite pieces come together here to create a really comfortable yet cute outfit!

Quality family time while taking blog photos with my brother-in-law, niece and the dog around!

Time to link-up your looks from this last week of Create28 or any other posts you are proud of!

At Last!

(Semi) fall weather has finally (temporarily) arrived...just in time for the official start of the season!  I celebrated the occasion by pulling-out all of the stops...a scarf, booties and vibrant fall hues!  Well, I guess not all of the stops.  I convinced myself that the tights can wait until it's just a little bit cooler.

I think that this scarf might just be my favorite seasonal transition piece.  It is light enough to wear during the spring and fall.  Plus, it is floral but in darker hues which I think makes it more appropriate for transitioning out of or into cooler weather.

You will be seeing this shirt again next week when I post my September purchases.  I just couldn't resist the warm color or the quilted shoulders.  I can't wait to remix it as the temperatures continue to drop!

Alright, mes amis, I'm off to drink my Pumpkin Spice Latte and peruse the lovely looks over at Skirt Week hosted by my friends Andi and Inge!  (Who am I kidding, I'm off to drink coffee out of my travel mug while teaching those crazy teenagers some French.)  But you should definitely check-out Skirt Week!

What I'm Wearing:
Shirt: Banana Republic (exact)
Scarf: Gift (similar, similar)
Skirt: Old Navy (similar, similar)
Booties: Belk (similar, similar)

Co-Hosting Très Chic Fashion Thursday

I am very excited to be co-hosting Très Chic Fashion Thursday with Agi from Vodka Infused Lemonade!  If you haven't visited her blog before, I hope you will stop-by today.  Agi is one of the most put-together moms I know and she posts great tips for wardrobe remixing.

In the process of becoming more thoughtful about my wardrobe and how to put my outfits together, I've discovered a trick to getting dressed that is so easy, I feel like I'm cheating:  if there is a piece in your closet that you absolute love, buy similar pieces to fit each season.  That way, you can recreate your favorite previously-worn looks regardless of the weather!

For example, I love my 3/4 length-sleeved, black and white striped top!  I wear it all of the time when the weather is chilly.  Since I know that I get tons of wear out of this shirt, I knew that purchasing a short-sleeved version would be worth every penny.  Look at how I recreated one of my favorite winter ensembles featuring the striped top!

What is your favorite closet staple?  Do you have a version for every season?

And sometimes this happens when your friends volunteer to take outfit pictures:

What I'm Wearing:
Striped Tee: Old Navy (similar, similar)
Belt: Anthropologie (similar, similar)
Skirt: Old Navy (similar, similar)
Flats: LOFT (similar, similar)

Style Swap with Undergraduate Style

Have you stopped by The Brandied Pair or My New Favorite Outfit lately?  If so, you will have noticed that Jenn and Ginny have started a fun, new link-up called Style Swap!  In order to participate, you choose a blogging buddy and then recreate her look.  Or, the two of you can agree upon a style that you both want to create.  I know that I read style blogs to draw inspiration from other ladies, and this link-up is great motivation to actually use a look that inspires me!

When I learned about this link-up, I immediately knew that I wanted to swap styles with Alex from Undergraduate Style.  I have developed a fun relationship with Alex via the internet.  You can truly feel her kindness and enthusiasm through reading her blog.  We also share our taste in fashion and have similar pieces in our closet.

Alex was immediately game to swap styles and mentioned that she has a teal skirt similar to mine.  We decided to go with the teal skirts plus a few stripes to create our looks!  And voilà!  Our swapped styles!

I promise that we did not actually discuss the black and white striped tops or the black tights before wearing our outfits and sharing our photos!  I guess great minds think alike, right Alex?

I love the way that my outfit turned-out for a couple of reasons.  First, the teal skirt and this particular striped shirt are wardrobe staples of mine.  The looks are classic and they fit well!  Both pieces pair really easily with so many other items in my closet...so naturally I would put them together!

Also, as I mentioned in this post, stripes and leopard are two of my favorite patterns to mix.  Wearing leopard print flats with a striped top is my go-to method of mixing patterns.  You just can't go wrong with this combination!  Plus I got to wear this adorable belt that my parents gave to me for Christmas.  A bow and leopard print?  I am in belt heaven!

Make sure to check-out Undergraduate Style to learn a little more about Alex's look!  You may have noticed that I practically live in booties so obviously I love what she's done with her look!  I also really like her statement necklace. It really pulls in the blue hue of the skirt and pops against her striped top.

And I'm still rocking those red lips!
